This year Westwood Cross have chosen to support SSAFA and Cheerful Sparrows charities raising money for them through bucket collections, wishing well donations and gazebo hire.
SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity.
The third largest military in the UK, SSAFA is the UK's oldest national tri-service military charity, with some 6,000 volunteers in its networks of 90 branches and service committees, all providing practical, emotional and financial support to anyone who has ever served and their dependants.
An estimated five million people in the UK have served in the Armed Forces at some point in their lives; each one is entitled to lifelong support from SSAFA regardless of their length of service. SSAFA’s work is financed by contributions from benevolent funds, generous donations from members of the public and the profits generated by SSAFA Health & Social Care Department, which is contracted by the NHS and MOD to provide direct support to serving personnel and their families in the UK and overseas.
Founded in 1885 and formerly known as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, SSAFA’s 130 years of experience have helped them to understand the unique demands of military life – and they believe that those who have served their country should get the best possible support when they need it.
The history of SSAFA is the history of the men and women of Britain's Forces and their families. Through two World Wars and every subsequent conflict involving Britain, SSAFA has been there for our servicemen and women and their families. The ability to adapt quickly to their needs is still at the heart of everything SSAFA does. SSAFA never stands still - their new services provide vital support wherever and whenever it is most needed.

The Cheerful Sparrows
Thanet Cheerful sparrows are the only remaining branch in the country. Its origins date back to the Boer War in1880 and the Thanet Branch was established in 1925.
They aim to improve the lives of people in Thanet by providing essential items to people in need. The Charity has no paid staff, does not pay anyone expenses or a pension, and has no properties or a head office.
Having received a referral from professional link workers, such as Health Visitors, Teachers and Social Workers, in the main the Charity provides small amounts, supplying essential items in the home, such as school uniform, school shoes, cookers, fridges, beds and bedding. Imagine needing a bed for your child who has outgrown their cot and having no money to buy one.
We would like to thank our valued customers for your support in raising money for SSAFA and Cheerful sparrows as well as all other charities that collect vital donations at Westwood Cross.
